Cape Cod Frenzy News Release
Orleans, Massachusetts: The high flying forward for the Cape Cod Frenzy, Rob Sanders, showcased his dynamic skills on the hardwood at the 2007 ABA All Star Game in Halifax, Nova Scotia this weekend. Sanders, a 6'7 leaper who played his college ball opposite Boston Celtics forward Ryan Gomes at Providence, narrowly lost the Slam Dunk Contest on a final applause vote by the fans. On Sunday's All Star Game, Sanders was a bright spot for the East squad and potential MVP candidate with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The 2007 ABA All Star Slam Dunk Contest was an exciting event for the nearly 3,000 Halifax fans in attendance. They watched as Rob Sanders was the only dunker to earn a perfect score of 40 in each of the first two rounds. In winning the first two rounds, Sanders defeated notable AND 1 Streetball Tour dunkers Robert "50" Martin and Cardell "Ballaholic" Butler. Meeting Sanders in the finals was Donnie Beecham of the Texas Tycoons. Beecham's animated personality helped him woo the crowd, as did his first dunk of the final round where he jumped over a group of kids. Despite the crowd leaning towards Beecham's showmanship, Sanders, using pure power and dunking ability, pushed the Texas Tycoon into an overtime dunk off. For his final dunk of the contest, Sanders showed 'Vince Carter athleticism' by replicating his elbow-all-the-way-into-the-rim dunk. A perfect score would've crowned Sanders, but the judges elected to award the winner by audience applause, and the crowd rewarded Beecham for his outgoing showmanship.
On Sunday, Sanders, who started at forward for the East All Stars, helped his team get out to an early lead by scoring 9 points in the first quarter. The crowd was on edge whenever Sanders got the ball, anticipating a possible 'slam dunk contest' moment - and Sanders finally rewarded them with a big slam in the second quarter. He also showed acrobatic body control as he powered his way to basket for several shots. In the fourth quarter, the West began to pull away as the East had trouble bringing the ball up and turned the ball over for repeated 3D opportunities, and the West won 138-126.
The Frenzy high flier was a media darling and fan favorite from the opening day's press conference, at visits to local elementary schools, and during the main events. His picture was featured in the newspaper each day, and he had quite a following of local kids cheering him on by name.
"It was great experience to represent Cape Cod at the ABA All Star Game, the people in Halifax were great to us and everything was taken care of," said Rob Sanders, "I had a lot of fun and met some great people."
The All Star forward will be in action against his All Star Coach and teammates, Aaron Cook and Antonio Burks, this Thursday at 7:00 PM as the Frenzy travels to Burlington, Vermont to face the Frost Heaves. The Vermont Frost Heaves then make the trek down to Cape Cod in a rematch, on Saturday February 3rd, at Nauset Regional High School also at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available online at www.capecodfrenzy.com via E-Ticket or at the door.
