Strong pitching, timely hitting leads to Brewers' victory over Saugerties

UTICA - Two days after dropping a heartbreaker at home to the Albany Dutchmen, the Utica Brewers recovered with a 3-1 win over the visiting Saugerties Stallions. A combination of strong pitching from starter Ryan Simpler (East Tennessee State) and Wei-Yang Tsao (National Taiwan Sports University), and timely hitting were the major keys behind Utica's huge victory.

The Stallions got on the board first in the second inning as Eric Downey (Herkimer College) hit an RBI single that scored Dylan Jenkins (Susquehanna University). The Brewers answered right back in the bottom of the inning as Taylor Olmstead (UConn) drilled his fifth home run of the season off of Saugerties starter Nick Williams (Union) down the leftfield line. The game would remain a stalemate until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Kyle Schade (St. Andrew's University), who was named to the PGCBL all-star team last night, doubled home fellow all-star Ryan Cox (Kutztown University). Two batters later, Dominick Bregar (Colorado State-Pueblo) hit an RBI double of his own to score Schade to give his team a two-run lead. Tsao would shut the door on Saugerties in the eighth and ninth innings, but it would be a challenge for him to collect the save. After loading the bases with only one out in the eighth, Tsao would strike out pinch hitter Joe Venturino (Ramapo College) and force Jenkins to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice to escape the jam. After giving up a one out single to Downey in the ninth, he would force Jesse Uttendorfer (NJIT) and Nick Russo (University of New Haven) to pop out to second base to wrap up the win for the Brew Crew. Simpler pitched seven innings while giving up just one run on eight hits while striking out seven without issuing a walk to earn the win. Williams, who gave up three runs on nine hits while striking out seven with no walks in seven innings, was dealt the loss. Tsao, who now has not given up an earned run in 10.1 innings, notched his fourth save of the season.

The Brewers look to continue their momentum tomorrow night as they host the Newark Pilots for the final game of their six-day home stand at Murnane Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. As for the struggling Stallions, they will also be in action tomorrow night as they visit the Adirondack Trail Blazers in Boonville as they look to snap a five-game skid.
