Stockton Ports News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports pitching staff turned in another solid performance on Wednesday night, and the offense gave the club just enough to get by. The Ports scored a run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning that proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win over the Inland Empire 66ers at San Manuel Stadium, making it back-to-back wins for Stockton to open a six-game road trip.
Stockton's offense for a second straight game scored all its runs with two outs. With two outs in the top of the second, the Ports got three straight singles off 66ers starter Justin Anderson, the last of the three coming from Seth Brown and scoring Mikey White to give the Ports a 1-0 lead. In the third, Stockton had Richie Martin at first base with one out. Martin would be caught trying to steal second and on the very next pitch, Jose Brizuela hit a solo homer to right, his fifth in the last 10 games, to make it a 2-0 advantage.
Anderson would go on to be rendered a no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four in five innings pitched.
Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs, meanwhile, retired the first 14 batters he faced to begin his start. The perfect start ended when Michael Strentz reached on an infield single with two outs in the fifth. Jeff Boehm followed with a single to right and Roberto Baldiquin walked to load the bases. With the sacks full, Friedrichs got Ryan Sebra to strike out to escape the jam.
Friedrichs set the side down in order in the sixth. In the seventh with one out, Friedrichs walked Taylor Ward and then saw Strentz reach on an infield single to put runners at first and second. After the second out was recorded, a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third. Baldoquin came up and, after working the count full, lined a single just over the outstretched glove of the shortstop Richie Martin that tied the game at 2-2. It was the final batter Friedrichs faced as Jared Lyons (1-0) came on to make his California League debut with Baldoquin at second and got Sebra to ground back to the mound to end the inning.
Friedrichs would also be rendered a no-decision, going 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.
Lyons would go on to work a perfect eighth inning and earn the win in his debut while striking out two over a perfect inning-and-a-third.
After pitching around a pair of walks in the seventh, 66ers reliever Ronnie Muck (0-2) came back out for the eighth and gave up a one-out double to Chris Iriart. Two batters later with two outs, Justin Higley stepped to the plate and hit an opposite-field double to left to score Iriart and give the Ports the lead back at 3-2.
Muck would suffer the loss after allowing one run on two hits in two innings of relief.
Cody Stull (SV, 6) entered to pitch the ninth inning and, for a second straight night, Stull set the side down in order and recorded one strikeout in the process to notch his sixth save of the season and his second in as many nights.
The Ports and 66ers wrap up their series on Thursday night at San Manuel Stadium as Stockton goes for the series sweep. Left-hander Evan Manarino (0-1, 1.76 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Inland Empire right-hander Grayson Long (0-0, 0.00 ERA) who makes his California League debut. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
