Strong Island Sound re-sign Gary Williams
September 28, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Strong Island Sound News Release
Patchogue, NY, September 28, 2006 - Darren Cioffi, co-owner of the American Basketball Association's Strong Island Sound, announced today the resigning of last season's team captain Gary Williams. A native of Bay Shore, NY, Williams returns to the Sound in an effort to bring the second-year franchise its first ABA Championship.
An integral player during the Sound's first year in the league, Williams averaged 16.8 and 5 rebounds per game. His leadership on and off the court was a key factor in the Sound's reaching the league's Final Four in its inaugural season.
"Gary's professionalism and demeanor set the tone for the entire team," states Dytanya Mixson, new head coach of the Sound who served as an assistant in the organization's first season. "As a first year coach in the ABA, it's critical that I have confidence in the leadership on the court. With his vast experience, Gary will serve as an extension of the team's coaching staff. We're glad to have him back and look forward to working together to meet our ultimate goal - the ABA Championship."
Upon graduating from Bay Shore High School in the 90's, Williams played collegiate basketball at USC and then went on to play on a professional level in Europe. After a sluggish start to the 2005-2006 season, Williams and the Sound gained momentum during the course of the season, falling only two games short of winning the league championship.
Founded in 2004 by co-owners Darren Cioffi and Michele Wuestman, the Strong Island Sound bring high energy and intensity, as well as entertaining basketball to the arena every game night.
