Strong Island Sound News Release

Patchogue, NY- The Strong Island Sound finished two wins short of the ABA Championship in their inaugural season. Never standing pat, team owner/General Manager Darren Cioffi has added four more players to the roster from the team's two open tryouts held in September and October.

Size is a premium in the ABA, and the Sound have added a lot of it with Raheim Lowery. The Brooklyn-born center/power forward is 6'8" 260 pounds, and played collegiately at Medgar Evers College and Dowling University. In the 2002-03 season at Medgar Evers, Lowery averaged 11.5 points per game and led the CUNYAC with 10.3 rebounds per game and was named to the CUNYAC All-Tournament team. The following season, he transferred to Dowling and led the NCAA 2 with 16.1 PPG and was 10th in the NCAA 2 with a 62.1 field goal percentage. As a result, Lowery was named to the NYCAC 1st team, All Met 1st team and ECAC Honorable Mention. Following his college career, Lowery played in the EBC Rucker Park Summer League for Ms. Jones' X-Men team.

A teammate of Lowery's from Rucker Park is also on board. 6'4" 195 pound swingman Gregory Plummer is another Brooklyn product and played at Eckerd College, with his best season being 2004-05 with 15.7 PPG and 5.6 RPG. He also played overseas in the 2005-06 season with the BBC Nitia Battembourg (Luxembourg).

Two more local players from Brooklyn add to the back court of the Sound. Chris Grant is a 6'5" 190 pound guard from Morgan State and averaged 9.3 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.4 assists per game and 1.2 steals per game in 30 games for the 2004-05 season. Keith West, 6'2" 190 pounds, is a versatile player that can play the ‘1' or the ‘2', as he did at San Jose State.

The Strong Island Sound begin their second season on Saturday, November 4th at 7:05 p.m. when they travel to Baltimore to face the Pearls. The Sound open their home schedule on Friday November 10th at 7:30 p.m. at Suffolk Community College versus the Brooklyn Wonders, an ABA expansion team and an instant rival of the Sound.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
