Strong Island Sound News Release

Long Island, NY - The Strong Island Sound defeated the Maryland Nighthawks 111-101 in a Friday evening match-up, putting an end to Maryland's three game win streak.

The Sound led 31-27 after one quarter, but the Nighthawks went on an 8-0 run to open the second quarter. As opposed to taking 11 first quarter threes, the Nighthawks went down low to big man Dennis Edwards, who finished with 12 first half points. The Sound responded with a 10-0 run, regaining the lead 49-47 heading into halftime.

The Sound extended their lead in the third quarter to nine, but Maryland was able to dig into the Strong Island lead and cut it to one. Mark Karcher got fouled on a 3-point attempt and knocked down all three free throws. Then on the ensuing inbounds pass, Maryland stole the ball in the back court resulting in a 3D opportunity, and Randy Gill made a three-point basket worth four points.

The Sound, built an 86-82 lead in the final period, but Maryland was able to take the lead on a 3D basket by Andrew Washington with 7:53 remaining going up 87-86. Maryland however would get in foul trouble early and were in the penalty with 7:33 remaining. The Sound took advantage of Maryland's fouls troubles, attacking the basket and getting to the foul line. The Sound finished the game on 25-14 run, picking up their ninth win of the season, and built a full game lead over the Nighthawks in the Blue Central Division.

Maryland was led by Andrew "Spongebob" Washington's 19 points. Randy "White Chocolate" Gill, making his first of the season, finished with 15 points, and Mark Karcher added 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Nighthawks return to the hardwood tomorrow evening at 7:05 pm when they travel to the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, NY to take on the defending Champion Rochester Razorsharks.
