Streak Snapped at Eight

August 15, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

All good things must come to an end, and after a long day of travel, the Bakersfield Blaze ran into a buzz-saw named Senzatela, and the Modesto Nuts grabbed the opener of a three-game set, 5-1, at John Thurman Field.

Antonio Senzatela (W, 8-6) was the story of the night, as the Rockies pitching prospect worked 95 mph and touched 98 while moving at a break-neck pace over 7.0 innings.

Meanwhile, Tyler Pike (L, 3-6) struggled in facing the Modesto Nuts for a second straight start. After fighting his way through the first two innings while allowing just one run, the wheels came off in the 4th. Two homers for Modesto shook Pike, and a pair of singles, two steals and a passed ball gave Modesto a four-run cushion that they would not relinquish.

The Blaze got their lone run in the 3rd on a Nelson Ward homer, the Georgian's sixth of the year.

Bakersfield did have a few chances late, putting two runners on base in the 6th, 8th and 9th innings, but a baserunning mistake and some key pitches from Modesto held the Blaze at bay, and in a rare low-scoring effort, the Blaze could not come back against the Nuts in a 5-1 defeat.

Emilio Pagan worked three scoreless innings out of the pen, and Will Mathis pitched a spotless 8th.

Can't win 'em all, but luckily, the morrow brings a chance to start a new streak as the Blaze continue their three game set in Modesto with a 7:05pm start on Saturday night at John Thurman Field. Ryan Yarbrough gets the start in his return to the Blaze.
