Storm wins in comeback

Birch Run, MI (March 2, 2005) – The Great Lakes Storm won tonight against the Gary Steelheads 118-113 (5.0, 2.0) to move to 27-18 on the season. The Storm trailed by 13 at halftime, but found a way to comeback and maintain their hold on first place in the Eastern Conference standings. Gary ended their slim chances of making the playoffs as they dropped to 15-27.

Although the Storm has clinched a playoff berth, every game is critical because they are now trying to clinch home court advantage in the first round and possibly throughout the whole playoffs. Tonight they took a huge step towards clinching the conference. The game went back in forth in the opening quarter as the two teams traded baskets. Gary would win the first quarter 33-29 behind 11 points from Jemeil Rich. Gary pushed the lead to double digits early in the second quarter and led by as many as 13 points with under two minutes in the first half. They would go into halftime with that same lead as they led 64-51, along with winning the quarter 31-22. An early field goal in the third quarter gave the Steelheads their biggest lead of the night as they led by 15 points. The Storm would chip away at the lead and went into the final quarter trailing 88-84. The Storm won the third quarter 33-24 behind 12 points from Joe Dabbert. The Storm finally took the lead by one as they led 93-92 with 6:30 to go in the game. Doug Smith hit two big three's in the final three minutes to secure the victory.

The Storm's next game is on Monday, March 7th at home against the Michigan Mayhem. Tip-off is set for 11:05 am at the Birch Run Expo Center.
