GRAND ISLAND, NEB - If you are trying to end Sioux Falls' 17-game winning streak, it takes perfect execution of a perfect game plan. For the Nebraska Danger on Saturday night, the execution was lacking.
The Danger gave up big plays on defense early, got outgained 221-82, and turned the ball over three times as the Storm controlled the game from the opening kickoff en route to a 45-20 win at the Heartland Events Center.
"We ran into a really good opponent tonight," Danger coach Mike Davis said. "They played really well and when we are playing short-handed it makes it tough. We knew it would take a near perfect game to beat them."
The Danger played without reigning IFL most valuable player Jameel Sewell for the fifth time this season as new signee Kameron Smith played quarterback for Nebraska. Smith, who led Winston Salem State to the NCAA Division II title game in 2012, finished 12-for-24 passing for 97 yards and had two key interceptions.
For all intents and purposes, Sioux Falls had control of the game before Smith could even get his feet wet. They held the Danger on downs on their first possession, then scored touchdowns on three consecutive drives to take a 21-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Storm quarterback Chris Dixon connected with James Terry and Judd Harrold on 8 and 23 yard touchdown passes and then ran in from two yards out to end the first quarter. Nebraska countered with a Joe Houston field goal and Smith's 15-yard touchdown pass to Kayne Farquharson, but couldn't keep up.
"We knew we had to get a lead and keep it to have our best chance," Davis said. "Not scoring on that first possession, put us in a hole we couldn't get out of it."
After a defensive second quarter that saw Sioux Falls take a 24-13 lead to the break, the Storm put the game on ice in the third. Tory Harrison ran back the opening kick of the second half 51 yards for a score and when Smith was intercepted for a second time, the Storm countered with Dixon's 6-yard touchdown pass to Herrod.
Dixon was nearly perfect for the Storm, who moved to 12-0. He finished 16-for-24 with four touchdowns and ran for 23 yards and another score. Herrod had six grabs for 95 yards and two touchdowns as SF won their 18th straight game dating back to last season.
The Danger (9-4), who have clinched a spot in the Intense Conference title game, have the week off before travelling to play Texas on June 14th for the final game of the regular season. Nebraska would only host the game if they were to win and Colorado lost both of their final two games.
