TAMPA BAY - The five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm have signed free agent fullback/linebacker Leroy Thompson, wide receiver Jeroid Johnson and former Storm quarterback Stoney Case, Head Coach and General Manager Tim Marcum announced today.
Thompson, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound fullback/linebacker from Delaware State, is an 11-year veteran of the Arena Football League. He made his professional debut with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League and attended mini camp with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996. Prior to signing with the Storm Thompson played for the Albany/Indiana Firebirds (1996-2004), the New Orleans VooDoo (2005) and the Columbus Destroyers (2006).
During his time with the Firebirds he won a championship in 1999, was named AFL's "Built Ford Tough" Man of the Year in 2002, ranked in the top five in the AFL in every statistical rushing category in 2003 and became the team's all-time leader in rushing attempts, yardage, and touchdowns. With the VooDoo in 2005, he led the team in rushing with 37 attempts, 86 yards and eight touchdowns. This past season he was named Ironman of the game in Week 5, led the Destroyers with 49 rushing attempts (eighth in the league), rushed for 113 yards and recorded six rushing touchdowns.
Winston, a 6-0, 200-pound wide receiver from New Mexico State, is a three-year veteran of the AFL. He began his professional career playing in af2 with the Richmond Speed in 2003 and then the Laredo Law in 2004. In 2005 he joined the Austin Wranglers and caught 10 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown. This past season he averaged 8.3 yards a reception for the Wranglers. He was the first player in New Mexico State history to be named to the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team for his dedication to community service. He finished his collegiate career with 119 receptions for 1,724 yards and 12 touchdowns, ranking him in the top 10 in NMSU history in those categories.
Case, a 6-3, 210-pound quarterback from New Mexico, is a three-year veteran of the AFL and will make his return to the Storm after spending the past season with the San Jose SabreCats. He was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round (80th overall) of the 1995 National Football League Entry Draft. Case spent six seasons in the NFL with the Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and the Detroit Lions.
During his NFL career he passed for 1,826 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 270 yards and five touchdowns. In college he was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the year in 1995. He was the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 8,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a career. He won a state championship with Odessa-Permian High School (TX), and was a member of the team featured in the movie and current television program Friday Night Lights.
