Storm shoot for third straight win, travel to California

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Chicago Storm shoot for their third straight victory when they face the California Cougars at 10 p.m. (CST) Friday, Feb. 15, at Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif. Stay up late for the live telecast on Fox Soccer Channel. The game is preceded by a tape-delayed telecast of Chicago's Feb. 2 match against the New Jersey Ironmen.

Chicago (13-7) is a half game behind the first-place Milwaukee Wave in the Major Indoor Soccer League standings. The Storm are coming off an 18-9 win against the defending MISL champion Philadelphia KiXX on Wednesday during the KiXX's School Day Game.

The Cougars (7-11) are searching for their first win since Jan. 4 against the Detroit Ignition. California's seven-game losing streak started when they fell to Chicago on Jan. 5.

STORM UPDATE

- Points leaders: Three Storm players rank in the MISL's top 20 in points. Matthew Stewart is 11th with 41 points, and he leads the Storm with 18 goals (all two-pointers). Stewart's two-point goal against Philadelphia on Wednesday gave him 200 career regular-season points. Carlos "Chile" Farias is tied for 13th with 40 points. Farias has 16 assists and 11 goals (two three-pointers). Stephen Armstrong is tied for 17th with 38 points. Armstrong has 14 goals (an MISL-leading eight three-point goals) and two assists.

- First MISL goal: In his fifth game, Storm rookie Gabriel Cigliano earned his first career MISL goal during Chicago's win against Philadelphia on Wednesday. His two-point goal gave the Storm a 4-0 lead at the 10:02 mark of the first quarter. Cigliano was one of seven different Storm players to net a goal against the KiXX.

- On the tube: The Storm are 2-1 in Fox Soccer Channel televised games, the third of which is a tape-delayed telecast of the Storm's Feb. 2 win against the New Jersey Ironmen. The game is televised on FSC at 7 p.m. (CST) Friday, before the start of Chicago's live match against California. Chicago's other FSC win was Jan. 18 against the Philadelphia KiXX.

COUGARS UPDATE

- Chicago ties: The Cougars acquired forward Chris Handsor in the 2007 MISL Expansion Draft from the Storm. In 2006-07, Handsor scored 36 points (13 goals, 10 assists) with Chicago. He played in 23 matches and earned a hat trick (and game-winning goal) against the Baltimore Blast on Dec. 30, 2006.

- On waivers: On Wednesday, the Cougars announced the placement of midfielders Marcelo Santos and Luis Pinto on the team's waiver list. Pinto scored three goals and had two assists in eight matches. Santos scored two goals in five games for California. He was acquired from the Orlando Sharks earlier this year, and he spent his rookie season with the Milwaukee Wave in 2006-07.

- Cougars vs. Storm, head-to-head: The Storm are 2-0 against the Cougars this season. On Oct. 27, 2007, a late three-point goal by Randy Soderman catapulted the Storm past California, 11-10. On Jan. 5, the host Cougars had a 4-0 lead, but the Storm scored eight of the game's next nine goals en route to a 17-8 win. The Cougars have lost seven straight, and during that stretch have been outscored by an average of about 8.5 points. The Storm are 10-4 against California all-time.
