California Cougars News Release
Stockton, CA - Feb. 14, 2008 - The California Cougars, of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), announce contract agreements with midfielder Majell Aterado and defender Aaron Bonser. The move comes after the Cougars placed midfielders Marcelo Santos and Luis Pinto on waivers yesterday. Both players are signed through the remainder of the season. Per team policy, terms of the deals will not be released.
"These guys are young kids that will bring a lot of speed and enthusiasm to the team," said Cougars head coach Bernie Lilavois.
"Majell (26) has played indoors for awhile with the Sonoma Sol, he also played for us in the preseason and for the (Stockton) Pumas. Bonser (23) has some indoor experience after playing in the PASL in Syracuse. W e'll use them mostly for their speed, their physical style of play and the energy they bring to the team."
The Cougars have lost seven straight games and several players due to injury over the last two months. Coach Lilavois hopes that his new players will excite his team.
"We lost our edge in speed and energy during this seven game losing streak. Hopefully, they (Aterado and Bonser) will spark the team with their energy and get us back in the win column."
Aterado played for the Cougars during their preseason training camp. He had three goals in two games played for the Cougars at Stockton Arena before the team played their regular season schedule. Aterado was delegated to the Cougars' development team roster, the Stockton Pumas, before the season because of a collarbone injury. The Cougars drafted him with the 121st pick in the 2007 MISL Supplemental Draft.
Bonser comes from Syracuse University where he played in 65 games over his four year collegiate career. Bonser most recently spent time with CNY United of the PASL's Mid-Atlantic division. He played for the Cougars during their exhibition match against the PASL All-Stars on February 10, 2008.
The Cougars (7-11) play tomorrow night against the Chicago Storm (13-7) at 8:00 p.m. inside Stockton Arena. The match is scheduled to be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel in front of national television audience. Tickets are available by calling (209) 373-1550 or by visiting californiacougars.net.
