Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
The Major's came out of the Christmas break tonight with a game against the Guelph Storm, their second and final meeting of the season. The Majors were in penalty trouble all night and Guelph took advantage. The Storm defeated the Majors 5-2. It was the Majors second loss to Guelph this season.
The Storm's Peter Holland opened the scoring midway through the first period at 8:56. Holland's goal was assisted by Michael Latta and Taylor Beck. The powerplay goal came just 15 seconds after Finnish forward Mika Partanen was sent to the penalty box for too many men on the ice. Guelph peppered Majors goaltender JP Anderson in the first period, outshooting Mississauga 18-10. Anderson was able to keep the Majors in the game though and the first period ended with Guelph leading 1-0.
Guelph expanded on their lead in the second period when Cody McNaughton scored the Storm's second powerplay marker of the game at 6:45. This time, the assists went to Beck and goaltender Brandon Foote. Dylan DeMelo was in the box at the time of the Guelph goal, after he took a holding penalty at 5:40. The Majors got themselves back in the game when Devante Smith-Pelly scored his 21st of the season at 11:51 to get the Majors within 1. Assists went to Justin Shugg and Riley Brace. Guelph answered back before the end of the period when Sam Lofquist scored Guelph's 3rd goal of the night at 18:37. The goal was assisted by Scott Kosmachuk and Holland. The second period ended with the score 3-1. Guelph outshot the Majors again, 15-12.
Mississauga could not make up the difference in the third period. The Majors pulled within 1 when Partanen scored a powerplay goal at 10:57. Shugg got his second assist of the evening on the goal while the other assist went to Marc Cantin. That was as close as the Majors would get as Guelph scored twice more (Beck from Latta and Chris Van Laren at 13:39 and Beck unassisted into an empty net at 19:36) to skate off with a 5-2 victory.
Brandon Foote started in net for Guelph and made 31 saves while JP Anderson was in between the pipes for the Majors and made 37 saves. Guelph outshot the Majors 42-33 on the evening. The games three stars were Beck, Shugg and Holland.
The Major's will have a tomorrow to rest before getting back on the ice in the new year with a game in Kingston on January 1st, then a their first home game of 2011 on January 2 at 2p.m. versus the Western Conference leading Saginaw Spirit.
