Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA - The five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm have signed free-agent defensive backs Jeroid Johnson and Daryon Brutley to two-year deals, Head Coach and General Manger Tim Marcum announced today.

"Bringing J.J. back was a top priority of ours for this offseason," said Marcum. "He had a good year last year and was our leader in the defensive backfield. Adding Brutley gives us extra depth. He has experience at this level and played well last season in af2."

Johnson, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, returns for his ninth season in the Arena Football League and second with the Storm. He started all 16 regular season games and the Storm's AFL Wild Card game in 2007. Johnson led the team in tackles (96.0), interceptions (10) and passes breakups (22), and was tied for the lead in fumbles recovered (3).

He finished the 2007 AFL season ranked second in the league in interceptions and interception return yards, tied for third in pass breakups, fourth in missed field goal return yards, and eighth in tackles and fumbles recovered. He ranks seventh in forced fumbles (18), 10th in pass breakups (99), tied for 10th in interceptions (36) and 14th in tackles (445.0) on the all-time AFL lists.

"I like it here in Tampa, we have great fans, it feels like home and I like playing for Coach (Marcum)," said Johnson. "I am excited to come back; we have a good nucleus of players returning from last year. I want to win a championship and I believe we have a great chance to do it this season."

The defensive back signed with the Storm on October 18, 2006. Prior to coming to Tampa Bay he played with the Orlando Predators in 2006 and led the Chicago Rush in pass breakups, tackles and forced fumbles in 2005. The 2004 season was an injury riddled season that he spilt between the Los Angeles Avengers and the Las Vegas Gladiators. From 2000-03 he played for the Gladiator franchise where he earned team MVP in 2003 and set a franchise single-season high with 83 tackles in 2002.

Brutley, 6-0, 190 pounds, is a physical defensive back that brings experience and depth to the defensive backfield. In 2007 he set a franchise record with nine interceptions for the South Georgia Wildcats (af2). Brutley also recorded 68.5 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, 17 pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

After his collegiate career at the University of Northern Iowa, where he was a First-Team All-Gateway Football Conference selection in 2001, he signed with the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free-agent. He made his rookie debut in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2003 after which he went on to NFL Europe and played with the Berlin Thunder. In 2004 he made his AFL debut with the Carolina Cobras.
