Storm names assistant coach

Birch Run, MI (November 8, 2004) – The Great Lakes Storm announced today that George Turner will be the top assistant for Head Coach Russ Bergman during the upcoming 2004-05 season. Coach Turner joins the Storm after a successful coaching career in both the high school and college levels.

"George will be an excellent addition to my staff because his basketball philosophy is similar to mine. He also brings an emphasis on defense which will compliment my offensive strategies," said Coach Bergman. "He is a proven coach at the high school and college levels and obtained valuable professional experience by coaching the Portland Trailblazers summer league team."

Coach Turner's first job came as an Assistant Coach at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1988. He helped take a team that was 4-21 the prior year to 17-8 in his first season. In 1991, he left Elmhurst College to accept an assistant coaching job for the women's basketball team at Northeastern Illinois, a Division I school in Chicago, Illinois.

In 1993, Coach Turner started as an assistant coach in the high school ranks before being named Head Coach at Francis Parker School in Chicago in 1997. In his second season he made it to the Illinois Class A Regional Championship.

In 2001, he was named Head Coach at Walter Payton College Prep, the first coach in school history. During his time at Walter Payton College Prep, Turner earned Chicago Public League "Coach of the Year" honors in 2003-04 after guiding them to their first ever Division Championship.

During the summer of 2004, Coach Turner spent his time as an assistant coach with the Portland Trailblazers rookie and free-agent team.
