July 10, 2022 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Sioux Falls Storm News Release
The Sioux Falls Storm overcame a slow start in the first quarter to outlast the Green Bay Blizzard 50-42 Saturday night at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Storm (8-7) currently sit in the final of four spots in the Eastern Conference eligible for the IFL playoffs, tied with the Quad City Steamwheelers. They are one game behind the Iowa Barnstormers for third place with one week left in the regular season.
Green Bay got the first score of the game four minutes into the game on a three-yard rushing touchdown and after a fumble on the kickoff return from Nate Chavious, the Blizzard quickly scored on the next play, taking an early 14-0 lead.
Carlos Thompson ran for one of his two touchdowns midway through the first quarter to cut the Blizzard lead in half at 14-7. After Green Bay scored on the ensuing possession, The Storm rattled out points on three straight possessions to take their first lead of the game at 23-20.
Quarterback Dalton Sneed had three rushing touchdowns in the game for the home team. One of which gave Sioux Falls an 11-point lead to close out the third quarter at 37-26. Green Bay came within a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Sioux Falls stretched its lead to 16 with six minutes remaining, making it too big of a lead for the Blizzard to overcome.
It was the last game of the season for the Blizzard, finishing their season with a 6-10 and missing the playoffs. Quarterback Jack Sheehan completed 15-of-25 passes for Green Bay, compiling 161 yards and three touchdowns. Sneed went 7-of-14 passing for 116 yards and two pass touchdowns, along with 13 rush attempts for 43 yards and three rushing touchdowns.
Chavious ran the ball 12 times for 34 yards and both of Thompson's rush attempts resulted in touchdowns. Donnie Corley reeled in three passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Tim Keith had two receptions for 26 yards.
For the Storm defense, Laronji Vason paced them with 5.5 tackles. Marquis Hendrix had four tackles, followed by Paris Taylor with 3.5 tackles and Famus Hasty had 3.0.
Coming into the night, the Storm needed help from other teams to get them into the fourth-place position. The Iowa Barnstormers won on the road against the Tucson Sugar Skulls securing their spot in third while the Steamwheelers lost in 2OT to the Frisco Fighters.
Next week, the Storm play the Fighters and can clinch a playoff berth with a win or a loss from Quad City. The Steamwheelers and Barnstormers play next week to close out their regular season schedules and can potentially end the season in a three-way tie for third place. Sioux Falls will play Frisco Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
