Storm Get First Win of the 2019 Season

SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Storm won a back and forth contest against the Cedar Rapids River Kings on Saturday, February 23. The Storm won 47-44 after a game winning field goal.

The first quarter started with a touchdown by newcomer running back Darrian Miller to put the Storm up 7-0. The River Kings answered back with a one-yard rushing touchdown by Nathaniel Chavious. The Storm would retake a 10-7 lead after a 31-yard field goal by Miles Bergner. The River Kings took a 10-14 lead after Kurt Palandach hit Marquel Wade for a 21-yard touchdown. The quarter would end with a 48-yard kickoff return by Tra'Von Chapman to put the Storm on top 17-14.

Cedar Rapids began the second quarter with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Palandach to Jordan Smith, giving the River Kings a 17-21 lead. Sioux Falls would regain a 24-21 lead after a 33-yard rushing touchdown by Darrian Miller. Cedar Rapids then took a 24-28 lead after a 10-yard quarterback keeper by Kurt Palandach. Sioux Falls retook a 31-28 lead with a 24-yard touchdown pass by Lorenzo Brown to newcomer Brandon Sheperd. Cedar Rapids would regain a 31-34 lead after a 27-yard reception by Marquel Wade from Kurt Palandach. Sioux Falls would end the half with a 14-yard field goal by Miles Bergner, tying the game at 34.

The River Kings would be the only team to score in the third quarter with a 35-yard field goal by Henry Neil to put them up 34-37. The beginning of the fourth quarter would start with a 17-yard field goal by Storm kicker Miles Bergner to tie the game at 37. The River Kings retook the lead after a three-yard rushing touchdown by Nathaniel Chavious. The Storm tied the game up at 44 after a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Brandon Sheperd and then kicked a 33-yard field goal by Miles Bergner to win the game 47-44.

The Lightning Strike Offense totaled 215 yards; 99 passing and 116 rushing. Quarterback Lorenzo Brown completed nine passes for 106 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 41 yards. Running back Darrian Miller rushed for 58 yards and had two touchdowns. Wide receiver Brandon Sheperd had seven receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown. Kicker Miles Bergner made four field goals and made all five extra points. Tra'Von Chapman had 95 kickoff return yards and one touchdown. Defensive back DeAndre Scott lead the Thunder Defense with nine tackles, he also had one forced fumble and one pass break-up. Defensive back Trey Wafford had two pass break-ups and one block. Defensive lineman Charles Williams had one sack and linebacker Daelin Young had one sack.

The Sioux Falls Storm will be back in action on March 9 when they play the Nebraska Danger at 7:05 pm.
