Sioux Falls Storm News Release
The Sioux Falls Storm of United Indoor Football (UIF) is pleased to announce an agreement has been made with Head Coach Kurtiss Riggs on an extension to his contract that would have him at the help through the 2009 season. Riggs led the Storm through a tough play-off this past season as the Storm won three road games in the inaugural 2005 play-offs of the UIF as they upset the number two seed, Sioux City Bandits, in front of a sell-out crowd in Sioux City, IA, for the United Bowl Championship, 40-38. Riggs and the Storm entered the post-season with the fifth seed out of eight teams that entered the play-offs after finishing the regular season with an 8-8 record.
Riggs has been with the Sioux Falls indoor football organization since the inception. He was the starting quarterback for the 2000 Sioux Falls Cobras, in the now defunct Indoor Football League (IFL), as well as the quarterback the first year (2001) of the Sioux Falls Storm. In 2002, Riggs stepped out of his football uniform and stepped in as an assistant coach of the Storm under former head coach, Mike Aldrich. In 2003, After Aldrich took a position with the University of Louisville, Riggs was hired as head coach for the Storm. Since then, Riggs has led the Storm to an amazing 29-15 regular season record and a 5-2 play-off record, with two Championship appearances by the Storm in his tenure. In his second year as Head Coach (2004), Riggs led the Storm to the Championship game that was hosted in Sioux Falls, but fell short to the Lexington Horsemen in a 59-38 loss. In recognition of his success that season, Kurtiss was awarded the Coach of the Year in 2004. The following 2005 season, Riggs led the success again turning around an up and down, injury plagued regular season, entered the play-offs and claimed the first ever United Bowl Championship and first Championship in Sioux Falls indoor football history.
"We're extremely excited to have a young coach with a lot of success both on and off the field to be with us for another four seasons," said Storm owner, Kent Vucurevich, "he's a class act and perfect for the Storm and what we are trying to accomplish."
"I hope we can continue the success that we've built over the last few seasons and continue to win championships," stated Coach Riggs. "I'm very fortunate to have great support from the organization and from the community. It made my decision to stay with the team easy." Riggs currently teaches at Roosevelt High School and is also the quarterback coach for the University of Sioux Falls. He and his wife, Leisa, reside in Sioux Falls, along with their two children. Kurtiss was a 1998 graduate from the University of Sioux Falls where he was a stand-out quarterback and led the Cougars to a NAIA National Championship as a player.
