San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Lake Elsinore pitching collected 13 strikeouts and did not allow a hit after the fifth inning in a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Storm's Chris Baker drove home the tiebreaking run with an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh as Lake Elsinore claimed the opener of the three-game series. The loss was San Jose's (48-64 overall, 14-28 second half) 13th in their last 17 games overall.
Gio Brusa (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Johneshwy Fargas (1-for-2, RBI) provided RBI hits for the Giants in the loss.
San Jose enjoyed an early 1-0 lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the first against Storm starter Ronald Bolanos. A walk to Jacob Heyward started the frame before the next two Giants batters were retired. Brusa followed with a ringing double off the fence in deep right center field scoring Heyward all the way from first.
DJ Myers started on the mound for San Jose and ran into trouble in the top of the second. Jorge Ona led off with a single before Brad Zunica stepped to the plate with one out and launched a towering two-run home run to deep right center. The homer, Zunica's 12th of the season, gave Lake Elsinore a 2-1 lead.
The Storm would put runners on first and second with none out in the third and fourth innings against Myers, but the Giants right-hander used double plays in both frames to escape trouble and keep San Jose within a run. The Giants then tied the game with a single tally in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Sandro Fabian blasted a double off the fence in left center before taking third on a wild pitch. Moments later, Fargas reached on a bunt single to third scoring Fabian to bring San Jose even at 2-2.
Myers finished his night with back-to-back perfect innings over the fifth and sixth. The Giants starter retired the final eight batters he faced.
With the score still tied, Peter Lannoo (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) entered from the bullpen to begin the top of the seventh and saw leadoff batter Edward Olivares reach safely on a throwing error committed by Kelvin Beltre at shortstop. Zunica followed with a single to right before a sacrifice bunt from Ruddy Giron advanced the runners to second and third. Baker was up next and his groundout to shortstop scored Olivares for a 3-2 Storm lead.
San Jose, meanwhile, didn't manage another hit after Jalen Miller's one-out single in the bottom of the fifth. In the seventh, down by a run, Fargas was hit by a pitch to leadoff, but was promptly thrown out at second attempting to steal. In the bottom of the eighth, Miller reached on an error to start the inning, but the next three Giants batters were retired. Lake Elsinore closer Dauris Valdez then struck out the side in a perfect bottom of the ninth to finish the game.
Bolanos (5-7) earned the win for the Storm after tossing six strong innings with just two runs (both earned) allowed. Bolanos surrendered six hits, walked two and struck out nine during his 105-pitch performance. Valdez pitched the final two innings for his eighth save of the year.
Lannoo (1-6) was saddled with the loss for the Giants after yielding the tiebreaking run in the top of the seventh.
