Stone Crabs stave off elimination, force Thursday finale
September 9, 2009 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs built a seven-run lead in Wednesday's game and not even a three-run homer from Nick Romero could shake it as the Fort Myers Miracle fell 7-4 in Game 2 of the Florida State League South Division Championship Series.
After winning on Tuesday at Charlotte Sports Park, the Miracle fell into an early hole at their home diamond. Starter Tyler Robertson struggled in three and one-third innings, surrendering six earned on nine hits. The left-hander's problems with Charlotte continued as he has posted an ERA of 15.00 in four starts, never going longer than four innings, with 19 hits, 15 earned runs, seven walks, two strikeouts, and two home runs in nine innings of work.
Ace David Bromberg and number two starter Robertson have both been roughed up in the series. Combined, they have an ERA of 13.00 in nine innings in the first two games with five walks and just four strikeouts.
Nick Romero came up with a big pinch-hit homer to bring in three in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Fort Myers went just 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base.
Boof Bonser pitched a perfect two innings, fanning four, while topping out at 92 mph. He is unscored upon in two relief appearances with the only baserunner having reached on a walk.
Drew Anderson was 3-for-5, Henry Wrigley was 2-for-4, and Ian Paxton was 2-for-4 for the visiting Stone Crabs. Despite totaling seven hits as a team, no Miracle batter tallied more than one.
Alex Cobb got the win in a rematch of the April 9 season opener against Robertson (0-1). Cobb (1-0) limited the Miracle to one earned run on six hits in five innings. He walked and struck out three. Richard de Los Santos recorded the save with a quiet ninth, but Marquis Fleming starred with two and two-thirds of scoreless relief, striking out six.
David Newmann will take the ball for Charlotte on Thursday night in an elimination game. Fort Myers has yet to name its starting pitcher, although right-hander Santos Arias and southpaw Mike Tarsi will both be available. Steve Hirschfeld, who also finished the season in the starting rotation, worked in relief on Tuesday.
The winner of Thursday's game will face the Tampa Yankees in Game 1 of the Florida State League Championship. The Yankees completed a sweep of Brevard County with a 5-2 win on Wednesday night.
