BRADENTON -- The Bradenton Marauders overcame some Major League obstacles to deal the Charlotte Stone Crabs a series opening 5-4 defeat on Tuesday.

Rehabbing Tampa Bay Rays starter Jeff Niemann looked good early, but ran into fourth inning trouble that allowed Bradenton to take a 4-2 lead.

That lead would stand until Rays designated hitter Luke Scott, also on a rehab assignment, connected for a game-tying, two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Charlotte worked over Kenn Kasparek for a pair of first inning runs to build the lead. Scott singled and then advanced to third on Todd Glaesmann's ground rule double. The Stone Crabs took a 2-0 lead when Phil Wunderlich's single scored both men.

The Marauders used two-run doubles by Alex Dickerson and Elevys Gonzalez on consecutive Niemann pitches to first tie and then immediately move ahead, 4-2.

The Rays righty finished his night allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks over 3-1/3 innings. He struck out three batters as well.

Scott's home run took Niemann off the hook for the loss, knotting the game 4-4. It would stay that way until the bottom of the eighth.

Bradenton broke the tie against Charlotte reliever T.J. Geith (0-2) when Gonzalez came through with yet another big hit. This time, his pop fly down the right field line fell in for a double that put his club ahead 5-4.

The Marauders got three scoreless innings from Jason Townsend (6-2), who picked up the win. Doug Salinas worked the ninth for his sixth save.

Scott, playing for the fourth time in his current rehab assignment, went 2-for-4 with the two-run homer and a pair of runs scored. He is now 4-for-14 with three runs scored overall.

The series continues on Wednesday as the Stone Crabs send lefty Braulio Lara to the mound against Marauders right-hander Jameson Taillon. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
