Stockton Snaps Skid with 15-5 Rout
STOCKTON, Calif. - After enduring their longest losing streak of the season, the Stockton Ports took their frustrations out on the San Jose Giants in a big way Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports plated a season-high 15 runs and blasted five homers on their way to a 15-5 win over the Giants to snap a season-long five-game losing streak.
The Ports opened the scoring with a four-run fourth inning that started with a one-out solo homer by Will Toffey. After a single by Chase Calabuig and a walk drawn by Sandber Pimentel, Collin Theroux opened it up for Stockton with a three-run homer to left to make it a 4-0 contest.
San Jose got two runs back in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer by Kelvin Beltre to cut the Ports lead in half. They were the only run given up by Ports starter Evan Manarino (2-2), who earned the win after going six innings and allowing five hits while matching a season-high with eight strikeouts.
Stockton reupped its lead in the bottom of the fifth as Luis Barrera drew a leadoff walk and scored on the first of two homers on the night hit by Nate Mondou to make it 6-2. Luke Persico followed with a double and, after a hit batter and a fielder's choice force play, Giants starter Joey Marciano (0-1) was lifted for Sandro Cabrera. Cabrera would retire Pimentel and Theroux to end the inning, but Pimentel's groundout brought in a seventh Ports run.
Marciano would suffer the loss in his California League debut as he allowed seven runs on eight hits over four-and-a-third innings. Cabrera would work the sixth and allow an unearned run after a two-out throwing error was committed by the third baseman Beltre that allowed an eighth run to score to make it an 8-2 contest.
Ty Damron took over for Manarino in the seventh and issued back-to-back one-out walks that put two aboard. Jalen Miller would come up with two on and hit a three-run homer to let that brought San Jose to within three runs at 8-5. After allowing an infield single, Damron was lifted for Sam Sheehan, who hit Jacob Heyward to bring the possible-tying run to the plate in Gio Brusa with one out. Brusa would line into a double-play to Pimentel at first base to end the inning and the final San Jose threat of the night.
Damron allowed three runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Sheehan would work a scoreless inning-and-two-thirds in relief.
The Ports opened it up with their biggest inning of the night in the bottom of the seventh facing Giants reliever Rodolfo Martinez. Martinez issued three straight walks with one out to load the bases for Trace Loehr, who brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 9-5. Brallan Perez followed with an infield single that loaded the bases again for Barrera, who hit a two-run single into right field. Mondou followed with a three-run homer to right that stretched the Stockton lead to 14-5 and knocked Martinez from the contest.
Franklin Van Gurp came on in relief and closed out the seventh and pitched into the eighth, where he surrendered a solo home run to Pimentel that capped the Stockton scoring and made it a 15-5 contest.
Martinez allowed six runs on three hits and three walks over two-thirds of an inning. Van Gurp allowed just the Pimentel home run in his inning-and-a-third.
Brendan Butler pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game for Stockton.
Mondou finished the night 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, matching Pimentel for the most RBI in a game for a Ports player this season. Mondou also became the fifth Ports player this season to hit two homers in a game.
The Ports and Giants play the third game of their four-game set on Wednesday at Banner Island Ballpark. Matt Milburn (5-2, 4.03 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander Carlos Sano (1-1, 4.66 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
