15 and Counting for Quakes
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes continued their historic stretch with a 15th consecutive victory on Tuesday night, defeating the JetHawks 6-1 at LoanMart Field.
The offense was churning from the get-go and starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin racked up career-high strikeout totals over an encompassing team effort.
Rancho held the lead for the entire night as four of six runs crossed in the opening frame. Rylan Bannon reached on a one-out double against Lancaster starter Brandon Gold and Cody Thomas followed with a single. Cristian Santana stepped up with two aboard and cleared the bases with a double to make it 2-zip. Logan Landon followed with a two-run shot off of Gold (6-6), his tenth homer of the season to cap the quick 4-0 advantage.
Gonsolin settled in out of the gate, striking out the first four batters he faced and seven in total over his first three scoreless innings. Catcher Brian Serven managed a run-scoring single off of Gonsolin (4-2) in the fourth for the only Lancaster run of the game. The University of Saint Mary's product completed five innings of work, allowing three hits and striking out a career-high eleven hitters in his fourth win of the season.
Bannon heaped on the first of two insurance runs in the sixth when he tripled home Saige Jenco who reached on a walk. Bannon proceeded to score from third on a bizarre play during the inning. Cody Thomas hit a broken-bat slow roller towards second base and the barrel of the lumber went spiraling towards second baseman Max George. George evaded the debris but allowed the ball to sneak into right field as Thomas raced into second with an RBI-double making it 6-1.
For the second consecutive night, the Quakes enjoyed productive relief from the bullpen as Jason Richman pitched two scoreless frames and Connor Strain duplicated the effort in his California League debut.
With the win, the Quakes improve their league-leading second-half record to 18-2 and sit seven games atop the south division over second place Lancaster (11-9).
The Quakes will look to extend their franchise-record winning streak once again on Wednesday, looking for a 16th straight win as RHP Austin Hamilton (0-0) makes his first start in a Rancho uniform. He'll be opposed by south-paw Ty Culbreth in game three of the four-game series.
It will be Bark in the Park Wednesday at LoanMart Field brought to you by Terra Vista Animal Hospital. $3 pet passes are available for purchase at the Quakes ticket office with proceeds benefitting the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center.
