San Jose Giants News Release

Stockton's Trevor Cahill and two relievers combined to limit the San Jose Giants to two hits on Wednesday night in a 3-0 Ports victory at Municipal Stadium. In front of a crowd of 3,001, Stockton snapped San Jose's season-high winning streak at five games. The Giants finished their season-opening homestand with a 5-2 record.

Cahill (3-0), a former second round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics, surrendered just two singles during his six innings of work. Cahill, who now owns a 0.50 ERA this season, struck out nine and walked only one. Relievers Arnold Leon (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) and Andrew Carignan (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO) combined to preserve the shutout over the final three frames. Carignan was credited with his third save of the year.

Tim Alderson (2-1) was a tough-luck losing pitcher for the Giants after surrendering one run on four hits over six innings. Alderson, who threw 76 pitches during his outing, walked one and struck out four.

Stockton jumped in front against Alderson with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs, Josh Horton started the rally by drawing a full-count walk. Chris Carter followed by driving an 0-2 pitch from Alderson off the fence in center field for an RBI double.

The Ports extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning when Horton led off with a single versus reliever Ryan Shaver. Carter followed with a single and then Jermaine Mitchell doubled to plate Horton with the second run of the contest.

In the eighth, Sean Doolittle singled with one out facing Ryan Paul and scored three batters later on Mitchell's two-out single.

Sharlon Schoop (2-for-3) recorded both of San Jose's hits on Wednesday. Schoop reached on an infield single in the bottom of the third and then had another infield hit in the fifth.

The Giants' best chance to score came in the third inning when Elio Sarmiento was hit by a pitch to lead off before Schoop singled. Mike McBryde followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third, but Cahill recovered to strikeout the next two hitters, Tyler Graham and Bobby Felmy, to keep the game at 0-0.

Stockton out-hit San Jose by a 10-2 margin in salvaging a game in the series.

Notes: With the loss, the Giants fall to 9-5 - one game ahead of Stockton (8-6) for the top spot in the North Division ... Cahill has allowed just one run through 18 innings this season ... Alderson, a 2007 first round draft pick, suffered the first loss of his professional career ... He still boasts an outstanding 1.69 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP) through three starts ... San Jose had scored 41 runs during their five-game winning streak before tonight's shutout ... The two hits recorded were a season-low for the Giants ... Pablo Sandoval (0-for-3) saw his eight-game hitting streak come to an end ... Shaver (1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO), Paul (1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO), and Mike Musgrave (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) all saw action out of the San Jose bullpen.

On Deck: The Giants open a seven-game road trip on Thursday night with the first of four straight games against the Visalia Oaks. First pitch at Recreation Park is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. Jesse English (1-0, 1.86 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Visalia is expected to counter with Chase Christianson (0-0, 5.23 ERA).
