Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - Nick Stocks (8-4) won his fourth straight start and Mike Lyons struck out three in the ninth for his league leading 26th save as Tennessee (17-8, 52-43) topped Greenville (8-16, 44-48) 3-1 Wednesday afternoon at Smokies Park. The Tennessee pitching staff only allowed four Braves hits and one earned run. The win snapped a two game slide against the Braves.
Tennessee jumped on the Bubba Nelson (7-8) in the first inning when Papo Bolivar drove home Kevan Burns with a groundout and Bucky Jacobsen followed with a RBI single to score John Nelson. Chris Weekly added another run in the second when he smoked his second home run of the home stand off Nelson in the second.
Corey Aldridge broke up Stocks' no-hit bid with a lead off single in the fifth and scored the Braves only run on a groundout by Nelson. Stocks retired the first 10 batters he faced, taking a perfect game into the fourth before issuing a one-out walk to Lee Evans.
Lyons slammed the door on Greenville in the ninth. Following a leadoff walk to Bill McCarty, Lyons struck out the final three batters to end the game and bring himself one save closer to the Tennessee saves record. The Smokies will host the Braves for the final game in the four game series Thursday night at Smokies Park. The Smokies will send Rhett Parrott (6-9, 3.49) to face Daniel Curtis (1-0, 2.75) of the Braves in a televised contest. The game airs on CSS with coverage beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.
