Suns Down Rays 4-1

July 16, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release

Jacksonville, Fla. —Victor Rodriguez drove in three runs on a 2-4 effort, leading the Jacksonville Suns to a 4-1 win over the Orlando Rays at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Wednesday.

Shaky defense and cold bats added up to another tough loss for the Rays, who fell to 7-18 on the second half of the Southern League season. The Rays committed two errors and could muster only five hits on the night, wasting a solid seven-inning effort by Orlando starter Jim Magrane (L, 8-5).

Jacksonville and Orlando traded runs in the early innings, with the Suns scoring first on a two-out RBI double by Derek Michaelis in the 3rd inning. The Rays answered back in the 4th when Frank Moore tripled and Juan Salas drove him in to tie the score at 1-1. Jacksonville took the lead in the sixth after a pair of Orlando errors put runners on second and third with one out. The Rays intentionally walked Brennan King to load the bases, and Rodriguez plated Michaelis and Nick Alvarez with a two-run single. Magrane then got the inning-ending double play they were looking for – just one batter too late.

Rodriguez closed out the scoring by launching a solo home run off Orlando reliever John Benedetti in the 8th inning.

Orlando and Jacksonville close out the season series tomorrow at 7:05, with Orlando sending RHP Travis Minix (2-2, 4.31) to the mound to face RHP Will McCrotty (1-1, 3.76) for the Suns.
