Saint Louis FC News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY, Ok. - Saint Louis FC won 1-0 over Oklahoma City Energy FC in front of 2,679 fans at Taft Stadium in Match 6 of the USL regular season.
Saint Louis FC scored the lone goal in the 20th minute from a composed Christian Volesky finish after he was played behind the defense by a Corey Hertzog flick for his first goal of the season. The away side would hold out for the win which moves Saint Louis FC to 11 points with a 3-1-2 record while OKC Energy loses their fifth game in a row for a 1-5-0 record and 3 points in the Western Conference.
OKC Energy had the first chance of the game in the 2nd minute with a dangerous free kick from the left side of the box that was well collected by STLFC goalkeeper Jake Fenlason. STLFC responded the next minute as Volesky found himself on the end of a bouncing ball and tried to chip the onrushing OKC goalkeeper Matt VanOekel but his effort narrowly missed over the net. Volesky would not miss his next opportunity as Fenlason played a long ball to Hertzog which he cleverly flicked on for Volesky to run onto and slot past VanOekel in the 20th minute. OKC Energy would come close to equalizing in the 36th minute as Alex Dixon was played behind the defense by Jose Barril but his shot went wide to see STLFC maintain the lead heading into the halftime break.
The first chance of the second half arrived for Saint Louis FC in the 58th minute as Hertzog curled a free kick from the edge of the penalty area to the bottom right corner but the shot was saved by VanOekel. OKC Energy would finish the match with 10 men as Justin Charvez was shown a second yellow card in the 85th minute and their efforts to equalize came up short as Saint Louis FC earned all three points to remain undefeated in four games in a row.
"I'm extremely proud of all the players tonight," said STLFC Head Coach Anthony Pulis. "I thought they showed a tremendous amount of grit, resilience and togetherness to grind out a fantastic 3 road points in very difficult conditions. It wasn't pretty at times, but throughout the course of the season you get games like this. The important thing is to find a way to win which we did fantastically well."
