HARRISBURG, Pa. - Penn FC captain, Ken Tribbett, scored on a bicycle kick in the 89th minute to earn a 1-1 draw against Charleston Battery Saturday night at FNB Field on City Island. Penn FC extended its unbeaten streak to three matches in its historic home opener.
Trailing 1-0, late in the match, Head Coach Raoul Voss instructed his players to press higher up the field. Penn FC crashed the Charleston box in the 89th minute. Mauro Eustaquio chipped a ball, from the left side of the box, to the right side of the box. Tribbett steadied himself and flung his body backwards. His foot connected with Eustaquio's cross, and the ball bounced into the back of the net.
Blue smoke erupted from the Penn FC supporters' side as the team celebrated late equalizer. With only four minutes of added stoppage time, the teams played back and forth until the referee blew the final whistle.
Tribbett's heroics on both ends of the field earned him the Man of the Match award from the USL and from the Penn FC fan vote.
Penn FC's increased aggression on offense stemmed from Charleston's go-ahead goal in the 77th minute. Tah Anunga played a through ball at midfield to Ataulla Guerra. Guerra timed his run well and was one-on-one with Romu Peiser. Peiser went to ground to challenge a possible shot, but Guerra played the ball to the left of Peiser and squeezed a shot through a tight angle.
The teams played an uneventful first half, with Charleston earning a slight edge in possession and shots. Peiser saved three from the Battery in the first half and his most impressive save of the game required him to save the ball between his legs on the goaline.
Less than a month removed from their first match up in Charleston, the teams played aggressively on every challenge. Penn FC and Charleston combined for 25 fouls and seven yellow cards.
Penn FC returns to FNB Field for the second leg of its two-game homestand. The Blue and White have a quick turnaround and will host Nashville SC, Tuesday, April 24. Kick off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the game are available to purchase on pennfc.com/tickets.
