Arizona Sting News Release
GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Sting Head Coach and General Manager Bob Hamley announced Thursday the signing of forward Craig Conn to a one-year contract pending league approval.
"I'm very excited to play a full season in Arizona," Conn said from his home in British Columbia on Thursday. "We have a good group of players on the team and hopefully we can bring home the title this year."
Arizona acquired Conn from the Minnesota Swarm in exchange for first-round draft picks in both 2006 and 2007 on the trade deadline (March 25) last season. The move proved to be fortuitous, as Conn scored 11 points (6G-5A) in his 5 regular season games with the Sting before going on a tear in the playoffs, leading the NLL with 19 points (12G-7A), 5 of which (3G-2A) came in the Champion's Cup Final against the Toronto Rock. Conn was named NLL Overall Player of the Week in the first week of the season last year; the St. Catherine's, Ontario native was also awarded a spot on the East Division's 2005 All-Star Team as a reserve.
"Craig Conn has been a winner at every level he's played at and he proved last year with his playoff performance that he can do it in the pros", said Hamley. "We feel that he is one of the best young offensive right-handed forwards in the game today, and Sting fans will enjoy watching Craig play a full 16 games this season."
In his first NLL season two years ago, Conn was named to the 2004 NLL All-Rookie Team after a stellar freshman campaign with the Vancouver Ravens in which he scored 19 goals to go along with 20 assists and 60 loose balls in 13 games. The 5'11", 220 lb. forward was named Rookie of the Month in both January and February of 2004.
Originally drafted by the Vancouver Ravens in the first round (4th overall) in the 2003 NLL Entry Draft, Conn enters 2006 with 81 points (39G-42A) in 26 career NLL games for Vancouver, Minnesota, and Arizona. He also has a 55% career face-off winning percentage and 40 career penalty minutes.
The Arizona Sting is a professional indoor lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). In only their second season in Arizona (after re-locating from Columbus, Ohio), the Sting finished the 2005 season with a 9-7 regular-season record prior to going on to win the West Division Championship before losing to the Toronto Rock in the Champion's Cup Final (NLL title game).
