Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It was not the SwampDogs' night as they dropped a tough contest to the Wilson Tobs 5-2 Friday night at The Swamp.

The Tobs struck with a run in the first and then two in the third, all without hitting the ball particularly hard against Ryan Stinar, who was excellent on the mound.

He pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out seven.

The SwampDogs would not scratch a run across until the fifth inning when Kam Stewart singled home Jacob Whiting.

That would be the only run that Tobs starter Julio Valdez would allow on the night, being wildly effective in five innings spacing out three hits and two walks, while striking out four.

The Tobs would get the run back in the top of the sixth helped out on a sacrifice fly from Matt Rubino.

Will Bacon made his SwampDogs debut in the seventh inning, cooking up a 1-2-3 inning, recording two strikeouts.

The "˜Dogs would get their second run on a wacky play in the bottom of the seventh. Whiting singled with two men out, and Jason Blum followed with another single. Whiting, who was running with the pitch, was able to go first to third.

So with runners on the corners and two outs, Kam Stewart was at the plate. Blum decided to run on first motion from the lefty reliever Bryant Stafford, which turned out to be the wrong decision. Stafford threw over to first and Blum was hung out to dry. First baseman Dalton Knight threw to shortstop Frankie Navarrette, who would've had Blum out if he would have tagged him, but whom instead opted to throw home to try and get Whiting out, who had broken to the plate.

The catcher Rubino ended up dropping the ball and Whiting was able to slide in safely with a run.

The Tobs would tack on an insurance run in the eighth, and Chris Williams came on to get the save in the ninth, and the Tobs cruised to a 5-2 win.

Stinar got the hard-luck loss for the SwampDogs, falling to 0-1 on the season, Valdez earned the win, improving to 1-0. Williams' save was his second.

The SwampDogs are right back at it tomorrow night, as they host the Florence RedWolves at 7:05 pm at J.P. Riddle Stadium. For tickets and more information, call the SwampDogs offices at 910-426-5900.
