July 1, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Kansas City Monarchs News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Steven Stewart (4-1) gave the Kansas City T-Bones (25-16) six solid innings in his first career start Thursday night, leading them to a 5-2 victory over the Schaumburg Flyers (14-26) to finish off a four-game sweep at Alexian Field. It is the first four-game sweep for Kansas City since they took four games from Sioux City on August 25-28, 2004.
Stewart, who entered tonight with 54 career relief appearances, held the Flyers to two runs on just four hits in his six innings of work. The Flyers picked up their first run of the contest on an RBI groundout by Joey Gomes in the first inning. Stewart kept Schaumburg in check over the next four innings before Richard Mercado capped off the Flyers scoring with a solo home run in the sixth.
The right-hander struck out six batters while walking two in the victory.
Kansas City opened up the game with a three-run first inning against Dustin Glant (4-2). Ray Sadler drove in the first run with an RBI single before a two-run double from Jim Fasano gave the T-Bones a quick 3-0 lead. Sadler again singled with two outs in the third and eventually scored on an RBI single by Brian Joynt to push the score to 4-1.
Glant suffered the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits over six innings.
Sadler drove in the final run with an RBI groundout off Cody Evans in the seventh inning to cap the score at 5-2. Kyle Heim took over for Stewart in the seventh and left in favor of Drew Graham after surrendering a two-out double to Joe Nowicki. Graham induced a flyout to end the inning and threw a perfect eighth before giving way to T-Bones closer Franklin Perez in the ninth.
Perez struck out two of the three batters he faced in the frame to earn his third save of the season.
Kansas City now heads home for a six-game homestand, beginning with a three-game set against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks that starts tomorrow night. Kansas City and Fargo are currently tied for first place in the Northern League. First pitch is set for 7:05. Come out early for the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest, which begins at 4:05 p.m.
