
Goldeyes Rally Past JackHammers 9-4

JOLIET, IL - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (22-18) used a four run seventh inning to rally past the Joliet JackHamers (19-20) 9-4 Thursday afternoon at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers fell to 4-4 this season against the Goldeyes with three games remaining in the series.
Winnipeg sent ten hitters to the plate in the seventh, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead. Seven consecutive hitters reached base, including a stretch of five consecutive singles. Juan Diaz tied the game at four with a single and Kevin West gave the Goldeyes their first lead at 5-4 against Ross Stout (2-5). Kyle Dahman entered and allowed a base hit to Justin Justice and a two run single to Vince Harrison for the 7-4 advantage.
The JackHammers took an early lead over Chris Salamida (6-2) and the Fish, plating four runs in the second. Ryan Wehrle and Roberto Mena singled while Joe Billick walked to load the bases with one out for Jonathan Wyatt, who doubled down the left field line for the 2-0 lead. Kevin Rios followed with a two run single to put the 'Hammers up 4-0.
Salamida settled down to earn his league best sixth victory, tossing six innings allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Joliet did threatened in the eighth, drawing back-to-back walks with one out against Ian Thomas. Former JackHammer closer, Drew Shetrone, came on to face the tying run in Chris Colton. Shetrone got consecutive fly outs to left to end the threat.
Shetrone earned his first save with the Goldeyes, recording the final five outs. Another former JackHammer, Justin Justice, went 1-4 with a single.
Winnipeg picked up three in the fifth on a Luis Alen solo home run and a two run shot by Price Kendall to cut into the four run lead at the time. The Goldeyes added two more insurance tallies in the ninth off Brian Gartley for the 9-4 final.
Stout picked up the loss, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits over 6.1 innings. Wes Alsup made his professional debut in the eighth, walking two without allowing a run.
Wyatt picked up three hits while driving in two runs and Wehrle collected his first multi-hit game of the season with two singles.
The JackHammers and Goldeyes continue their four game set tomorrow night in Joliet. Todd Privett (3-2) will square off against Ace Walker (2-2). First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
