Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke has been named Rawlings Northern League Player of the Month for June, and his younger brother RedHawks pitcher Casey Hoorelbeke has been selected the Rawlings Pitcher of the Month for June.
Jesse Hoorelbeke, who leads the Northern League with 14 home runs, batted .337 (31- for-92) with eight doubles, a league-high 12 home runs, 22 RBI, and 22 runs scored in the month of June. He collected at least one hit in 18 of 25 games and a home run in nine games. His month was highlighted by a six-game stretch where he went 8-for-22 (.364) with six home runs (June 22nd - 28th).
He hit 21 home runs in 74 games with RedHawks in 2006 and returned to Fargo after playing the three previous seasons with Bridgeport (Atlantic League). He also spent parts of the 2006 and 2008 seasons playing in the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels farm systems.
The 6-3, 250-pounder, is a nine-year veteran and has hit 193 career home runs. He was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002 as a non-drafted free agent out of the University of Louisiana-Monroe (Monroe, LA).
Players also receiving Player of the Month votes were Freddie Thon of the Joliet JackHammers, Ray Sadler of the Kansas City T-Bones, and Joshua Short of the Lake County Fielders. Casey Hoorelbeke, who leads the Northern League with a 1.13 ERA, posted a 3-1 record with a 0.41 ERA for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the month of June. He appeared in 13 of the âHawks 25 games and won back-to-back games in relief on June 9th and 10th versus the Schaumburg Flyers.
Overall in the month, he struck out 25 batters over 21.2 innings, including 10 straight appearances with at least one strike out. He also has not allowed an earned run since June 2nd, a span of 19.2 innings pitched. His only loss of the season occurred on June 19th versus the Lake County Fielders when he allowed an un-earned run.
The 6-8, 265-pounder is in his seventh professional season, first with Fargo-Moorhead. He played for Bridgeport (Atlantic League) last season where he went 3-3 with a save while appearing in 43 games. He was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 29th round of the 2000 amateur draft, but did not sign opting to play collegiately at Lewis-Clark State College (Lewiston, ID). He went on to play in the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets minor league farm systems from 2004-08.
Other pitchers receiving consideration for Pitcher of the Month were Willie Glen of the Gary- SouthShore RailCats, Scott Roehl of the Rockford RiverHawks and Andrew Cruse of the Kansas City T-Bones.
