Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Ethan Stewart struggled with command early as the Clearwater Threshers dropped game two of a three-game set against the Tampa Yankees, 9-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Bright House Field.
Things unraveled in the third for the Threshers' starter when the Yankees (4-3) plated five runs on four hits off the lefty.
Stewart allowed Claudio Custodio to lead off the frame with a double down the left-field line. Jake Cave then reached on a liner off the glove of shortstop JP Crawford, advancing Custodio to third. Stewart then walked Jose Rosario to load the bases with nobody out.
The Threshers' starter retired Greg Bird on an infield fly to short, but Dante Bichette, Jr. reached on an error by second baseman KC Serna and plated the first run. Matt Snyder doubled in two to stretch Clearwater's deficit to three. A walk to Aaron Judge loaded the bases again and Yeicok Calderon singled in a run to end the day for Stewart.
Jordan Guth hit the first man he faced, allowing another run to score, before retiring Custodio and Cave to end the inning.
Clearwater (3-4) used a combination of Guth, Dan Child, and Lino Martinez in relief of Stewart (4-7). The Threshers starter allowed five runs - four earned - in just 2.1 innings, while giving up six hits and four walks.
Guth's hit batter was his only blip as he worked 2.2 scoreless innings. Child allowed four runs on seven hits in his three innings of work, putting the Threshers in a 9-0 hole. Martinez came on in the ninth and struck out two.
Clearwater's bats were silent against Yankees' starter Luis Severino (1-1). The Threshers did not put up any hits and drew just one walk in six innings against the Tampa starter.
Crawford had the first hit of the game for Clearwater's offense in the seventh inning off of reliever Stefan Lopez. Nick Ferdinand and Brandon Short reached without the benefit of a hit to load the bases with no outs.
Harold Martinez's infield single plated Crawford, and an errant throw by third baseman Bichette, Jr. allowed Short to score on the play as well, bringing the game to 9-2. Chris Serritella's sac fly to center scored Ferdinand from third, to cut the Tampa lead to six.
That would be the only offense the Threshers would muster on the afternoon. Ferdinand and Short reached to start off the ninth, but a fly out by Art Charles and a fly out double play by Harold Martinez ended any threat.
The series concludes Thursday night at Bright House Field with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on threshersbaseball.com beginning at 6:45 p.m.
