Steve Pearce & Chris Archer Honored as International League Players of the Week

The International League announced today that Scranton/Wilkes-Barre first baseman Steve Pearce and Durham pitcher Chris Archer have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 7-13. Pearce is the second member of the Yankees to win an IL weekly award this season, following in the footsteps of Dewayne Wise (April 9-15).
STEVE PEARCE, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
SWB Yankees first baseman Steve Pearce led the International League with three home runs, four doubles, seven extra-base hits, and a .920 slugging percentage last week to go along with a .400 batting average. Pearce went just 1-6 during a doubleheader on Tuesday, but he caught fire starting Wednesday when he homered. Thursday he collected season-highs with four hits, three doubles, and three runs scored. He followed that up with home runs again on Friday and Saturday. He is the League's leading hitter so far this season with a .361 average through 34 games. Pearce is also tied for the IL lead with 12 doubles.
29-year-old Steve Pearce is in his eighth season as a professional player. He is a veteran of 185 games in the Major Leagues, all coming with the Pirates between 2007 and 2011. He signed with Minnesota as a free agent during the offseason, but was released by the Twins in March before signing a new minor league deal with the Yankees. Pearce is a native of Lakeland, Florida.
CHRIS ARCHER, Durham Bulls IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Durham right-handed pitcher Chris Archer had won just one of his first six starts this season, but last week he was victorious twice and was 2nd in the League with 14 strikeouts to earn Pitcher of the Week honors. Archer went 6.0 strong innings Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader at Syracuse. He held the Chiefs to one run on four hits as Durham went on to win 2-1. Archer looked even sharper on Sunday in a matchup with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in Rochester. Archer again tossed 6.0 innings of one-run baseball, this time allowing just three hits and striking out a season-high nine batters. The Bulls won 3-1 to give Archer his club-best third victory on the season. He also leads all Durham pitchers with 40 strikeouts.
23-year-old Chris Archer is in his seventh season as a professional pitcher. He first reached the Triple-A level last season with Durham, going 1-0 with just one run allowed in two late-season starts. Archer is a native of Raleigh, North Carolina.
