Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - June 29, 2006 - Center-fielder Nick Steppe delivered a run-scoring single with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the 8th inning to lift the Newark Bears to an extra-inning 5-4 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers in game one of a doubleheader at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium Friday night. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Bears.
Will Pennyfeather opened up the fateful 8th inning with an infield single to short stop and Alexis Hernandez followed with a resounding double into the left field corner. After Dario Delgado was intentionally walked to load the bases, Steppe ripped a 2-0 pitch down the right field line for the game-winning base hit. The Bears are now 3-2 in extra inning games this season.
Steppe finished the game 2-2 at the plate with 2 RBI and 2 walks. Pennyfeather added 3 hits and 2 runs scored in 4 at bats; and Hernandez was 2-4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.
Lancaster had tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the 7th inning after two Bears errors allowed for an unearned run. Bears starter Joe Gannon received a no-decision despite allowing only 2 earned runs over six innings of work. Joey Cole (2-1) picked up the victory for Newark in relief, allowing one hit and 2 walks while striking out 2 batters in 2 innings of work.
Denny Harriger (7-2) tossed his second complete game of the season in absorbing the loss for Lancaster. He surrendered 5 earned runs and 13 hits on the night.
