Bears lose 2nd game of doubleheader, 8-1

NEWARK, NJ - June 30, 2006 - The Newark Bears dropped the second game of the doubleheader to the Lancaster Barnstormers 8-1 Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the loss, the Bears split the two games after taking game one 5-4 in extra innings.

Barnstormers centerfielder Reggie Taylor led the way with two home runs. His first came in the top of the third inning, and he would later add one in the top of the seventh inning. He finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, his ninth and tenth of the season, a double, three runs scored, and four RBI. Designated hitter Lance Burkhardt also added a two-run home run in the top of the second inning, his eighth of the season.

The Bears run was scored by second baseman Jack Santora when he scored from third base on an RBI groundout by right fielder Jose Herrera in the bottom of the third inning. Herrera finished the day 1-for-4 with a double, and RBI.

Carlos Mirabal (0-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in three innings, while Joe Dooley (1-0) earned the victory pitching five innings allowing one run on four hits, while striking out five.

The Bears and Barnstormers will not play on Saturday, however will complete the series on Sunday beginning 1:35 pm at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Gates open at 12:35 with the first 1,500 fans receiving a FREE Newark Bears Beach Towel. All fans will be allowed to participate in the pre-game autograph session presented by Home Remodelers Group, and all children 14 and under may take part in the post-game kids run the bases.
