July 13, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (July 13)- Along with a successful track record and several awards, the Texas Brahmas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) have announced the signing of goaltender Steve Silverthorn for the 2011-12 season.
Silverthorn comes to Texas following three seasons of excellent play overseas in Germany. Over the last two years, the Owen Sound, ONT native played for Schwenningen ERC where he posted an outstanding 60-24-0 record with 10 shutouts. In 2008-09, Silverthorn was a member of Bad Toelzec and had 33 wins in 45 games and four shutouts. He was named the best goalie in the league during his tenure there.
Prior to shipping sail eastward, the 30-year old goaltender played for the Idaho Steelheads of the East Coast Hockey League (2005-08) and their American Hockey League affiliate, Iowa Stars (2006-08). Playing between the pipes for the Steelheads, Silverthorn had a 68-37-14 record and 10 shutouts. In the 2006-07 campaign, the steady netminder led his team to win the Kelly Cup Championship as well as earning the Kelly Cup MVP title. His 16 wins and 1,388 minutes played in 2007 made the ECHL playoff records in a single season.
In his second and third season with Idaho, Silverthorn received numerous call-ups from the AHL affiliate, Iowa, where he played 13 games, recording 3 shutouts. In his first AHL game, he stopped all 32 shots for a shutout, only to be followed by a second consecutive shutout in as many nights. The back-to-back shutouts became the Iowa Stars' first in franchise history. Silverthorn also holds the record for longest shutout sequence with 128:25 minutes of blanking his opponent.
Familiarity with Brahmas Head Coach Dan Wildfong surfaces from Silverthorn's collegiate career at Colgate University, Wildfong's alma mater. As a Raider, the 6-foot-2 goalie played in 100 games, posting a 55-30-9 record and eight shutouts. He was the co-winner of the Terry Slater Trophy his senior year; an award presented to the player who exemplified leadership and dedication on and off the ice.
Following several seasons of courting Silverthorn, Coach Wildfong is excited to announce the addition of Silverthorn to the Brahmas roster.
"With this signing, the Brahmas will have stability and strength between the pipes. Steve is a proven successful goalie, and we believe he has what it takes to put the Brahmas back on top in the CHL," said Wildfong.
Silverthorn is the third player announcement by the Brahmas, joining defenseman Jim Burichin and forward Alex Curran. The Brahmas 2011-12 season will open in October, but season tickets are available now, including flexible packages.
