SteepleCats Snap Skid

July 4, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

The North Adams SteepleCats not only had the bats going for them Sunday afternoon, they also had great pitching and did not commit a single error on defense as they defeated the Sanford Mainers 7-4 at Joe Wolfe Field. With the victory, the SteepleCats snapped a three game losing streak and improved to 11-9 on the season.

"We took a little bit of a dive for a couple of games but I think that more importantly was the way we got back on track in all three facets of the game," said Pitching Coach Jonah Bayliss. "Pitching, hitting, and defense were all there. That was probably the best part."

In his fourth start of the season, Braxton Wilks went six innings, gave up two runs off of four hits, and struck out four. He brought his strikeout total on the season to 18 and improved to 4-0.

"He is just consistent," said Coach Bayliss. "He attacks hitters, he stays down in the zone, he does not issue a lot of walks, and he mixes his pitches well."

Ako Thomas led off the game for the Mainers with a single. Zach Jancarski followed with a double advancing Thomas to third. Both runners came in to score on a pair of sacrifices giving the Mainers a 2-0 lead. After that, Wilks settled in and cruised for the rest of his outing.

"When you know that the offense is going to have your back you know you do not have to put up zeros every inning," said Wilks. "You can just battle and do your best and if you give up a run here or a run there they are going to pick you up."

Offensively, the SteepleCats responded immediately after falling behind 2-0. Nick Riotto led off the bottom of the first with his first of three singles on the night. He then came around to score cutting the lead to 2-1 and setting the tone for the night. The 'Cats added a run in the second to tie the game and then took the lead for good and a solo shot by C.J. Price in the third.

The SteepleCats are looking forward to continuing their momentum through the home stand and taking the field tomorrow in front of a capacity crowd to celebrate Independence Day Monday night at Joe Wolfe Field.

"We had somewhere around 600 fans here and I know that is going to be almost 1000% more tomorrow when we have 6,000 people," said Wilks. "When you have the fan base that we have and know what you are playing for and just playing in this great country makes it a lot more fun."
