Gary Steelheads News Release

The Gary Steelheads had plenty to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day, including their first-place standing in the CBA's Eastern Conference. But, about the time they finished eating their turkey and dressing, the team fell back to second place Thursday night as Rockford defeated Albany, 126-119. The Lightning picked up 6 quarter points in the win.

The Steelheads hit the road Friday night to face the Michigan Mayhem at the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon. The game is a rematch of Tuesday night's game, won by the Steelheads at the Genesis Center in Gary, 93-82. The Steelheads maximized the impact of the win with 6½ quarter points, winning three of the four quarters and tying the other. Gary displayed tremendous defensive intensity, holding Michigan to just 33 first-half points.

The Steelheads got balanced scoring, with four players in double figures. Guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter and forward Randy Holcomb tied for scoring honors with 23 apiece. Holcomb added 15 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Hunter handed out 5 assists with 2 steals. Center Darrell Johns registered his second double-double of the year, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots. Forward Marlowe Curry contributed double-double totals of 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

The Mayhem were paced by the CBA's leading scorer, Alpha Bangura, who fired in 31 points. Stais Boseman added 21 points with 12 assists. Jamar tossed added 10 points with 11 rebounds for Michigan.

Game time is 7:05PM EST. Gary hosts the Albany Patroons at the Genesis Center at 3:00PM Sunday afternoon.

- After dropping their season opener to the Rockford Lightning at the Genesis Center, the Steelheads have bounced back with two straight wins. Against the Michigan Mayhem Tuesday night, the Steelheads showed their defensive intensity, holding the Mayhem to 33 first-half points.

Tonight marks the 13th meeting between these two teams.

- Mayhem guard Darrick Martin is the first NBA callup this year. He joined the Toronto Raptors just prior to the beginning of the CBA season.

- Michigan's Alpha Bangura leads the CBA in scoring with a 36 ppg. average.

- Jimmie "Snap" Hunter is currently 2nd in the CBA in scoring (29.7 ppg). He also ranks among the CBA leaders in three other categories. "Snap" is 4th in the league in assists (6.3 agp.), 3rd in the league in steals (3.0 spg.) and 7th in three-point shooting (.438).

- The Steelheads' Darrell Johns has logged back-to-back double-doubles, both Gary wins. He currently ranks 5th in the CBA in rebounding (10.3 rpg.), 4th in field goal percentage (.688) and 2nd in blocked shots (2.0 bpg.).

- Fresh off an 11-rebound effort, the Steelheads' Marlowe Currie has moved up to 7th in the CBA in offensive rebounding (4.0 rpg).
