
Steelheads defense shines in win over Mayhem

GARY, Indiana (November 22, 2005) "" Benefiting from their best defensive effort of the year, the Gary Steelheads defeated the Michigan Mayhem at the Genesis Center Tuesday night, 93-82. In the process, the Steelheads seized first place in the Eastern Conference of the CBA.
This game stood in sharp contrast to the Steelheads' first two games of the season with the up-tempo Rockford Lightning. Michigan and Gary played to a 13-13 tie in the first quarter. The Mayhem managed just 33 points in the first half, shooting just 33.3% from the field.
In the second half, the tempo of the game increased and the Steelheads pulled away, winning both quarter points. Gary earned 6ý quarter points with the victory, ý quarter point more than Rockford earned in its 133-127 win over the Sioux Falls Skyforce in Rockford.
The Steelheads got balanced scoring, with four players in double figures. Guard Jimmie "Snap"Â Hunter and forward Randy Holcomb tied for scoring honors with 23 apiece. Holcomb added 15 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Hunter handed out 5 assists with 2 steals. Center Darrell Johns registered his second double-double of the year, with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots. Forward Marlowe Curry also added double-double totals of 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
The Mayhem were paced by the CBA's leading scorer, guard Alpha Bangura, who tossed in 31 points in defeat. Guard Stais Boseman added 21 points, with 12 assists.
The two teams will meet again this Friday at the L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon. Then the Steelheads will return home on Sunday afternoon to host the Albany Patroons at the Genesis Center.
