Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Allentown, PA: With last week's defeat of the Yellow Jackets, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (5-0) are now in sole possession of the North Division lead. This week they host their western rivals, the Central Penn Capitals (1-4). Kickoff will be at 7:00pm, Saturday night on Embassy Bank inside the PPL Center.
Lehigh Valley is coming off a strong victory of the other Pennsylvania team, the Yellow Jackets of Philadelphia, who now sit in second place in the North Division. The 'Hawks offense maintains their effectiveness through a varied attack. Last week, QB Jake Jablonski's (945 pass yds, 28 total tds, 61% completion rate) five touchdown passes went to three different receivers - Brandon Renford (9 tds), Darius Prince (9 tds), Jerrell Young (5 tds). Each of these receivers has 20 or more catches for more than 200 yards and each allows Jablonski to have options on each play.
The often overlooked offensive line has been great for Lehigh Valley this season - Jeff Braun, David Osei, Lloyd Morrison, along with FB John Alvarez; has not allowed a sack the last two games and gives their quarterback plenty of time to make reads down the field.
The Steelhawks defense has been spectacular this year, only allowing 23.2 points per game, snagging 17 interceptions, recovering five fumbles, and recording 13.5 sacks. The front five is great at getting to quarterbacks and forcing bad throws that the ball-Hawking defensive backs have been knocking down (13 pbu's) or picking off (13 ints).
Central Penn has made some roster and coaching moves the past few weeks. Former player, Andre Coles has taken over as head coach. They've added veteran players such as OL Victor Sesay and WR Keith Stokes. FB Eugene Goodman has been breaking through for some important yardage, especially in the red zone; and they have some experience under center with either quarterback, Juice Williams or Ray Wagner. Defensively, DB Armar Watson and LB Jermaine Thaxton have played together before and bring veteran vision and leadership.
The Capitals were in Raleigh, NC last week where they played the Torch to a close game, only losing by six, 47-41.
Although getting the job done last week, the Steelhawks still have to focus on playing a complete four quarters in all three phases of the game - offense, defense, special teams. The first time these teams met, the Capitals were dangerous on kickoffs, returning the ball to great field position multiple times.
It will be a White-Out game with the 'Hawks wearing all whites. The game this weekend is presented by Lehigh Valley Health Network, and the first 2,000 fans will receive FREE Rally Towels. Tickets are as low as $10 and can be purchased in advance or on game day at the PPL Center box office.
