Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks opened their 2016 season with a win over the visiting Philadelphia Yellow Jackets. In a back and forth game, the Hawks held on to claim a victory by the score of 41-28.
Both teams appeared slightly rusty in their first game of the season offensively. Each team threw two interceptions and both gave up fumbles recovered for defensive touchdowns.
Lehigh Valley's first touchdown of the year came from the defense. LB Tim Hume got to quarterback Steffen Colon and forced a fumble that DL Larry Ford would recover in the endzone to give the Hawks the first points of the contest. That play received the Cantelmi Hardware Hard Hit of the Game seal of approval.
The Steelhawks offensive production picked up in the second half where most of the points were scored. In a game that saw both Hawk quarterbacks taking snaps; Clay Belton ran for a touchdown and threw for two - both to WR Darius Prince, while Jake Jablonski threw two touchdowns to WR Warren Oliver.
There were plenty of missed opportunities to put the game away earlier, but the defense stepped up late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. After extending their lead to 13 points (41-28) with just under four minutes left on the clock, the defense recorded back to back interceptions to keep the Yellow Jackets from stinging. DB John Williams got the first at the 3:08 mark, and then LB Chris Alvarez capped the game when he got the pick with nine seconds left.
The Steelhawks will be on the road for a month, playing next week in Harrisburg against the Central Penn Capitals, before returning home to Embassy Bank Field inside the PPL Center for a Friday night matchup against the Winston Wildcats on April 8th.
