Reading Express News Release
The Reading Express looked like a completely new team in the first half, giving the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks a major run for their money. After a back and forth battle between the teams, the Express entered into the second half one score ahead of their cross-town rivalry.
It was a string of three touchdowns in the second half by Ryan Leafy, two passing from Bryan Randall and one solo rush, that put the Steelhawks back on top stealing the momentum from the Express.
The Express just couldn't stop the Randall and Irani DeAraujo combo that scored five times throughout the game. DeAraujo racked up 134 yards on 12 passes from Randall, and Randall went 23-of-33 for 236 yards and seven touchdowns total.
Randall ended the second half finding now Steelhawk member Joshua Floyd in the end zone with just six seconds remaining in the half.
The Express' Chris Schubert and Keith Stokes kept the team alive during the game keeping it close. Schubert started the scoring series with a pass from Tim Bailey. After the Steelhawks answered with DeAraujo snagging a 14-yard pass from Randall, Bailey found Stokes 41 yards down-field for his first reception of the season, a touchdown, to maintain a lead, 14-7.
Although the Steelhawk Randall-DeAraujo combo picked up a score with just over two minutes left in the first quarter, Schubert showed no mercy when he ran the kickoff return 45 yards in for a touchdown just six seconds later, ending the first quarter 21-14, Express on top.
The Steelhawk defense kicked it up a notch in the second half when they allowed just one touchdown, a Stokes kickoff return for 46 yards with 3:50 left in the third to tie the game 41-41.
From there, the Express just couldn't get a stop, and the Steelhawks went on to score three more times in the fourth to claim a victory.
Statistically speaking, the Steelhawks outgained the Express by over 140 yards. In the end, the Steelhawks were able to make the stops on defense and catch up in the second half in order to claim the victory.
