Steelhawks Fall in Lions Den
June 30, 2015 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (6-6) fell at the claws of the number one seeded Columbus Lions (8-3), 41-69 in the first round of the PIFL Playoffs. The Hawks left too many points on the board and the Lions receivers were lethal the entire game.
In the third meeting between the teams, and after having a lackluster last four games, the Hawks decided to mix up the starting line ups. Starting for the offense were Zach Zulli at quarterback and Joe Powell at wide receiver; Stefaun Whitehead would get start at defensive back.
Both teams started off hot in the first quarter, matching each other score for score. The difference coming off a missed extra point attempt for LV. WR Mack Ogletree would get both of the Hawks first quarter touchdowns, the first lined up as a full back and running it in from one yard out, the second when Zulli would find him on a 40 yard first down play. Columbus' touchdowns were to Terrence Ebagua and Jarmon Fortson. Six foot seven receiver Ebagua would dominate, finishing with five touchdown catches and 148 yards in the game. Lehigh Valley had the chance to take the lead at the end of the first quarter, but would get stopped on 4th and goal from the one yard line. At the end of the first, the Hawks only trailed by one; but Columbus would never relinquish the lead.
The Lions would extend their lead to 14 by halftime; with Ebagua catching three more touchdowns. He snagged a one handed touchdown catch early, then a 12 yard score, and finally QB Casey Kacz floated him an 18 yard pass. Meanwhile, the Steelhawks would turn the ball over on downs twice, the final turnover coming as time expired in the half. They would keep the score within reach with a Zulli completion to a wide open Powell in the middle of the endzone; followed by a completion to Ogletree for the two point conversion.
Columbus would hold the Steelhawks to one score in the third quarter; a one yard keeper by Zulli after Ogletree had two big catches with some impressive yards after. The Lions' in turn would score 21 points, all on Kacz passing touchdowns. Both teams would score two touchdowns in the fourth. Mcsweeny would come in at quarterback, completing a shovel pass to Ogletree for a touchdown. Final score would be: Columbus Lions 69, Lehigh Valley Steelhawks 41.
With the win the Lions will host the 2015 PIFL Championship on Monday, July 6th against the Richmond Raiders who defeated the Nashville Venom (2014 PIFL Champions) 54-35 in the other playoff game this weekend.
