Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are excited to announce the return of a veteran arena football receiver that electrified fans in the Valley during the 2013 season. WR Tyrone Collins (6', 200, Wagner) is back in the Black and Vegas Gold and will be a potent offensive weapon this coming season.
Collins joined the Hawks in the middle of the 2013 season and immediately made an impact. He racked up 814 yards on 76 catches, scoring 14 touchdowns in the process. He finished the 2013 arena season with the AFL's Pittsburgh Power. For the 2014 season, Collins joined the eventual AFL Eastern Conference Champions Cleveland Gladiators where he recorded 45 catches for 482 yards and eight touchdowns. His season with the Gladiators was unfortunately cut short due to injury.
Head Coach Chris Thompson couldn't be more excited to have the veteran Collins back. "Having the opportunity to bring back Tyrone after his successful stint in the AFL that was ended short only to an injury, is a no brainer for us. He his fully recovered and ready to make some plays again. There is no doubt he was one of the best to ever put on a Steelhawks uniform and we can't wait for the start of the 2016 season to get here. This camp has the potential to be the best WR core we have ever had if everyone comes in ready to perform. We know we might not have him very long but in the mean time we are going to utilize all of his playmaking abilities within our offense again like we did in 2013 when our fans enjoyed #5 scoring TD's."
The Steelhawks have also added a few more players from another successful open tryout. Five contracts were handed out; to WR/FB Jeremy Hartman (6'3, 230, Wilkes), WR Alex Coleman (5'8, 180, Capital), DB Lenroy Neysmith (6'3, 205, American International), DB/LB NaShawn Palmer (6', 210, Virginia University of Lynchburg), and LB/DL Carl Fleming (6'2, 235, IUP).
Hartman and Coleman join an already loaded receiver arsenal. As a tight end, Hartman had Wilkes' second highest receiving totals in 2014 with 35 catches for 492 yards and a team high six touchdowns. Coleman led Capital University his senior year in receiving and all-purpose yards, tallying 528 receiving yards on 36 catches with three touchdowns, and 1,252 all-purpose yards.
Neysmith and Palmer proved their ability during the tryout and will look to contribute to an experienced defensive roster. Fleming comes to the Hawks after being a standout defender at IUP for two seasons. He had plenty of honors for the 2012 season - named PSAC Championship Game MVP, a Don Hansen All-American honorable mention, All-Super Region One 1st team, and All-PASC West 1st team. In two seasons of play, he recorded 187 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, 11 passes defended, 4.5 sacks, and three interceptions.
Lehigh Valley has almost filled their 40 man AIF camp roster. Training camp will open in February where the Hawks will have to trim the roster down to 27.
