Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release
Allentown, PA: After a hard fought victory on Monday night, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (7-2) will be back on the road this weekend when they head to Muskegon, MI to take on the West Michigan Ironmen (8-2) in the Northern Division Championship game. Game time is slated for 8:00pm Saturday night, June 11th. Game updates will be posted on Facebook and Twitter for fans to follow.
The Steelhawks came from behind late in the second half to get the victory in River City. As a team, they faced adversity but overcame it all to work their way back into the game. The defense recorded a key sack on fourth down for a change in possession and tallied four interceptions; one of which leading to Lehigh Valley taking the lead in the fourth quarter, their first since early in the first half. The offense scored 30 points in the second half, 17 in the final five minutes of the game to put the 'Hawks ahead. Special teams helped sealed the game when K Spencer Hotaling (5-5 PATs, 1-1 FGs, 10 points) hit the deuce after the final touchdown and then the hands team recovered the onsides kick to finish it.
It was a total team effort that the team will need to repeat in the next game. Lehigh Valley has a short week to prepare for the divisional championship against a tough opponent.
West Michigan has been dominant so far this season. Their only loss was in week two of the season when they traveled to River City. Since that game, they have outscored opponents 481-149.
Their defense is led by their defensive backs, all of whom have some height, listed at six foot - Corey Edwards, Erik Thompson, Deonte' Hurst. Offensively, former AFL signal caller Alex Carder is under center and controls their offense. While WR Cornelius Johnson is listed at 6'2 and is a potential threat.
The AIF playoffs are down to four teams - Lehigh Valley and West Michigan in the North, and Columbus and Florida in the South. The AIF Championship destination will be determined after the weekend and will be played on June 18th.
