Alabama Steeldogs News Release
Birmingham, Ala. - The Alabama Steeldogs increased their offensive firepower this week after being assigned Auburn Tiger Standout Markeith Cooper.
Cooper comes to the Steeldogs with plenty of arena football experience, having spent three years with the AFL's Georgia Force from 2002-04 and the New York Dragons in 2005.
"Markeith is an extremely explosive player who will give our team a lot of speed on both sides of the ball," Steeldogs Head Coach Ron Selesky said. "We're excited to have a player of his caliber for this coming year."
During his stint with the Force, Cooper netted 1,928 yards receiving and 37 touchdowns, including a 24-touchdown performance in 2004.
As an Auburn Tiger, Cooper led the team in overall kick return yardage in 1998-99. During his freshman year with the Tigers, he rushed for 336 yards on 64 carries and reached the end zone three times.
The Steeldogs were also assigned wide receiver Dontay Spillman. The wideout played five games for the University of Louisville Cardinals in 2002 and finished his college football career at Texas College.
During his senior year at Texas College, Spillman averaged 28.6 yards per catch with 11 touchdowns. He finished the season with 744 yards on 26 catches. During his junior year at the school, Spillman had 1,138 all-purpose yards, including 714 on kick and punt returns.
