Steeldogs keep No. 1 spot in Week 15 poll

July 7, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - By a 10-point margin the Birmingham Steeldogs topped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers for the No. 1 position in the Week 15 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. This is the second straight week the Steeldogs are in the top spot. Last week Birmingham beat the Pioneers by twelve points for the number one position.

The Steeldogs received 262 points including 14 first-place votes. The second place Pioneers earned 252 points and three first-place votes. In the third spot was the Tulsa Talons with 241 points and two first-place votes. The Cape Fear Wildcats came in at No. 4 with 234 points and six first-place votes, keeping the top four the same as last week.

Four teams moved up in this week's poll. The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz moved from seventh to fifth, the Bakersfield Blitz climbed from eighth to seventh, Louisville went from being 11th to 10th and the Hawaiian Islanders came in at No. 11 after not appearing in the Top 12 last week.

There are three games between Top 12 teams in the schedule this weekend as the No. 1 Steeldogs put their ranking on the line as they face the No. 9 Firecats on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, No. 5 Quad City renews its rivalry with No. 6 Tennessee Valley on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. ET and No. 7 Bakersfield faces division foe No. 12 Hawaii on Saturday night at 12:30 a.m. ET.

Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
