Chicago Steel News Release

GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Former Chicago Steel defenseman Owen Power and forwards Matt Coronato and Mackie Samoskevich were each selected in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft on Friday night, marking the first time in the 21-year history of the Steel that multiple players were taken in the first round of the same draft.

Power, a 6-foot-5, 214-pound defenseman, became the first Steel alum to be selected with the #1 overall pick when he went off the board to the Buffalo Sabres to kick off the 2021 Draft. The former Steel blueliner is now the highest ever NHL Draft pick in Steel franchise history.

In his Steel career, the Mississauga, Ontario, native played 103 games and registered 65 points (23G, 42A) from 2018-2020.

Before his freshman season at the University of Michigan in 2020-2021, Power was named USHL Defenseman of the Year and USHL First-Team All Star in 2019-2020 after being named to the USHL All-Rookie Second Team in 2018-2019.

With the 13th overall selection in the first round, the Calgary Flames selected 2021 Clark Cup champion Matt Coronato, now the highest Steel forward ever taken in the NHL Draft.

Coronato registered one of the most prolific seasons in USHL history in 2020-2021, tallying 85 points (48G, 37A) in 51 games, the second-most goals in a single season in USHL history.

The Huntington, N.Y., native led all skaters in the 2021 Clark Cup Playoffs with 13 points (9G, 4A) in eight contests during the Steel championship run.

Coronato's individual league honors included USHL Forward of the Year (2020-2021) and USHL All-Rookie Second Team (2019-2020). The 5-foot-10, 180-pound forward is the Steel all-time franchise leader in career goals (66) and markers in a single-season (48). The Harvard University-bound skater sits second in career points (125) and single-season points (85) on the Steel all-time lists.

Mackie Samoskevich rounded out the Steel selections in the first round, taken off the board with the 24th overall selection by the Florida Panthers.

Samoskevich, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward, totaled 37 points (13G, 24A) in 36 regular season games in 2020-2021 before posting 10 points (1G, 9A) during the playoffs in the Clark Cup Championship run.

In his rookie season with the Steel during the 2019-2020 campaign, the Newtown, Conn., native charted 34 points (13G, 21A) in 47 games played. Samoskevich is committed to the University of Michigan.

The Steel will send out an additional recap following the second through seventh rounds of the Draft on Saturday, July 24.
